The Salination Situation in An Dien, Thanh Phu, Ben Tre – The Fate of Sea-Bordered Land

The Mekong Delta is currently grappling with a severe salination crisis, particularly in coastal areas like Ben Tre. This situation is exacerbated by climate change and human activities, leading to intensified saltwater intrusion due to rising sea levels and prolonged droughts. The region’s low elevation, just 80 cm above sea level, renders it particularly vulnerable to these changes.

Salinity poses not only environmental challenges but also significant economic threats. The Mekong Delta is crucial for Vietnam’s food security, contributing over 50% of the nation’s rice production, as well as substantial portions of fruit and seafood exports. Saltwater intrusion jeopardizes agricultural productivity, thereby threatening food security across Southeast Asia.

Efforts to combat this crisis include constructing water reservoirs, promoting water-saving techniques, and encouraging crop diversification. However, experts warn that existing measures may be insufficient, as current infrastructure often fails to supply adequate fresh water

Children First – Small Effort from Wana Beverage to Start a Series of Joint Solutions for the Long Run

RO Filtration System – An Affordable Solution for Schools and Residents

“It only took two weeks to install the system, and we guarantee three years of fresh water capable of supporting the entire school operation and neighboring residences. After installation, the water was sampled and sent for testing at the Pasteur Institute, confirming it as sanitized and safe for consumption. Over the next three years, we will replace the filtration cores every three months and conduct annual checks to ensure the highest quality of water,” shared Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, CEO and leading engineer in the installation process.

This water treatment system utilizes RO filtration technology with a capacity of 250 liters per hour. The reverse osmosis technology facilitates filtration without strict requirements regarding the water source. The output water quality meets standards for direct drinking water, fulfilling the need for clean drinking water for students and school operations.

CEO Nguyen Anh Tuan explaining the operation of RO Filtration system

The RO system provides clean drinking water daily for 221 students and 13 staff members at An Dien Kindergarten in Thanh Phu District. More importantly, the water filter also supplies clean water for cooking in the school cafeteria, enhancing the school’s capability to offer a full-day program, which is vital for children’s well-being and alleviates commuting challenges for parents.

The Feasibility for the Widespread of Filtration Systems in the Community

This program is significant in the fight against the impacts of salination in the area. As the first system installed in the province, it demonstrates the community’s ability to access fresh and clean water at home, alleviating concerns over fluctuating water supply prices during drought and severe salination periods. The province’s heavy reliance on freshwater for agriculture and fishing makes the lack of clean water a critical threat to its economy, potentially pushing the region back into severe poverty. Therefore, local authorities have emphasized the importance of this program and praised the collaboration in government media outlets.

Continued Support and More Actions to Come for Future Generations

The successful installation of the RO filtration system marks a significant step toward addressing the pressing issue of water scarcity in An Dien, Thanh Phu. However, it is only the beginning of a more extensive initiative aimed at ensuring sustainable access to clean water in the region. With ongoing support and collaborative efforts, we aim to create a resilient future for the children and families of Ben Tre, ensuring they have the essential resources they need to thrive.
