What is noni juice?

Noni juice is a tropical drink derived from the fruit of the Morinda citrifolia tree. Noni is a mango-sized fruit that is yellow in color. It is very bitter and has a distinct smell. Polynesians have used noni in traditional folk medicine for over 2,000 years. It is commonly used to treat health problems such as constipation, infections, pain, and arthritis.

Today, noni is mainly consumed as a juice blend. Juice contains powerful antioxidants and may provide a number of health benefits.

The nutritional composition of juice varies widely. One study analyzed 177 different brands of noni juice and found significant nutritional variability among them. This is because noni juice is often mixed with other fruit juices or added sweeteners to mask its bitter taste and odor.

The nutrients in 3.5 ounces (100 ml) of Noni juice are:

  • Calories: 47 calories
  • Carbs: 11 grams
  • Protein: less than 1 gram
  • Fat: less than 1 gram
  • Sugar: 8 grams
  • Vitamin C: 33% of the Reference Daily Intake (RDI)
  • Biotin: 17% of RDI
  • Folate: 6% of the RDI
  • Magnesium: 4% RDI
  • Potassium: 3% RDI
  • Calcium: 3% RDI
  • Vitamin E: 3% of the RDI

Like most fruit juices, noni juice contains mostly carbs. It is rich in vitamin C, which is essential for skin and immune health. Plus, it’s a great source of biotin and folate – B vitamins have many important roles in your body, including helping to convert food into energy.

Noni Juice: Nutrition, Benefits, and Safety

High antioxidants content

Noni juice is known for its high antioxidant content. Antioxidants prevent cell damage caused by molecules called free radicals. Your body needs a healthy balance of antioxidants and free radicals to maintain optimal health. Researchers suspect that the potential health benefits of noni juice are likely related to its powerful antioxidant properties.

The main antioxidants in this juice include beta carotene, iridoids, and vitamins C and E. Specifically, Iridoids exhibit strong antioxidant activity in test-tube studies – although more research is needed. to confirm their effects in humans. However, studies show that a diet rich in antioxidants – such as substances found in juice – may reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.

Noni juice can reduce cell damage – especially from cigarette smoke.

Tobacco smoke is also known to cause cancer. Certain chemicals from cigarette smoke can bind to cells in your body and lead to tumor growth. Noni juice may reduce levels of cancer-causing chemicals. Two clinical trials showed that drinking 4 ounces (118 ml) of  juice daily for 1 month reduced levels of cancer-causing chemicals in cigarette smokers by about 45%.

Supports heart health in smokers

Cholesterol has many important functions in your body, but some in excess can increase your risk of heart disease — as well as chronic inflammation. One study found that drinking up to 6.4 ounces (188 ml) of noni juice daily for 1 month significantly reduced total cholesterol, levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, and C-reactive protein in inflamed blood.

However, the subjects of the study were heavy smokers, so the results are not generalizable to everyone. Researchers suspect that the antioxidants of noni juice might reduce high cholesterol levels caused by smoking. A separate 30-day study gave non-smokers 2 ounces (59 ml) of noni juice twice daily. The participants did not experience significant changes in cholesterol levels.

These results suggest that the cholesterol-lowering effects of juice may only apply to heavy smokers. That said, more research is needed on this juice and cholesterol.

May improve endurance during exercise

Noni juice can improve physical endurance. In fact, Pacific Islanders believe that eating this fruit helps strengthen the body during long fishing trips and journeys.

A few studies show positive effects of drinking this juice during exercise. For example, one 3-week study gave long-distance runners 3.4 ounces (100 ml) of this fruit juice or a placebo twice daily. The group that drank water experienced a 21% increase in mean time to fatigue, which indicates improved endurance. Other human and animal studies report similar findings on the use of noni juice to combat fatigue and improve endurance. The increase in physical endurance associated with noni juice is likely related to its antioxidants – which may reduce the damage to muscle tissue that normally occurs during exercise.

May improve immune health

Noni juice may support immune health. Like some other juices, it is rich in vitamin C. For example, 3.5 ounces (100 ml) of this juice contains about 33% of the RDI for this vitamin. Vitamin C supports your immune system by protecting your cells from free radical damage and environmental toxins. Many other antioxidants found in noni juice – like beta carotene – may also improve immune health. One small 8-week study found that healthy people who drank 11 ounces (330 ml) of noni juice daily had increased immune cell activity and decreased levels of oxidative stress.

Dosage, safety and side effects while using noni juice

There is conflicting information regarding the safety of noni juice, as only a few human studies have evaluated its dosage and side effects. For example, one small study in healthy adults showed that it was safe to drink up to 25 ounces (750 ml) of this juice per day. However, in 2005, a few cases of hepatotoxicity were reported in people using noni juice. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) then re-evaluated the fruit, concluding that this juice did not cause these effects.

Also, people with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure may want to avoid juice water – as it is high in potassium and can lead to unsafe levels of this compound in the blood.

In addition, this fruit juice may interact with certain medications, such as those used to treat high blood pressure or those used to slow blood clotting. For this reason, it is important to consult with your doctor before drinking noni juice.
